Liquid Diamonds vs Live Resin vs Distillate

Three terms get used loosely on vape packaging, often interchangeably, and they describe genuinely different products. Knowing which is which tells you more about what a device will taste like than almost anything else printed on the box.

Distillate

Distillate is cannabis extract stripped down to almost pure cannabinoid. The process that concentrates it also removes the terpenes, which are the compounds responsible for smell and taste. What comes out the other end is potent and essentially flavourless.

To make it sellable, flavour is added back afterwards, usually botanical terpenes rather than cannabis-derived ones. That is why so many cheap carts taste like a generic sweet rather than like a plant, and why the flavour often thins out well before the oil runs out. The flavouring and the oil are not the same substance and they do not deplete at the same rate.

Live resin

Live resin is extracted from plant material that was flash-frozen at harvest rather than dried and cured first. Curing is when most volatile terpenes evaporate, so freezing immediately preserves them.

The result is an extract that tastes closer to the living plant than anything made from cured material. On delicate profiles the difference is substantial: fresh, green top notes survive, and so do the fuel and pine notes that conventional processing tends to flatten into something vaguely chemical.

Live resin is not stronger than distillate. It is usually less potent by percentage, because it contains more of everything that is not cannabinoid. What you buy it for is fidelity.

Liquid diamonds

Liquid diamonds start as THCa crystals, sometimes called diamonds, which are then redissolved into a terpene-rich sauce. You get the concentration of the crystal with a terpene layer carrying real flavour, rather than flavour bolted on afterwards.

Practically, this is the middle path: stronger than live resin, far better tasting than distillate, and it holds its character deeper into a tank because the flavour is part of the oil rather than an additive suspended in it.

How to taste the difference yourself

What none of this tells you

Extraction method is not a proxy for strength, and it is not a proxy for quality either. A badly made live resin is worse than a well made distillate.
